The Food Section
Award-winning food journalism covering food history, politics, and culture across the American South.
The Food Section covers food and drink across the American South with the seriousness and depth typically reserved for hard news. Founded by Hanna Raskin, a former food editor at The Post and Courier in Charleston, the publication treats food writing as a form of investigative journalism, exploring food history, business, and culture.
What began as a Substack Local grant recipient has expanded into a multi-city operation with bureau chiefs delivering rigorous food journalism to underserved communities across the South. The Food Section has won numerous awards for its writing and represents a new model for regional food journalism that prioritizes reporting over listicles and PR-driven coverage.
